4/ offered substantial prizes in the next 40 years
to push exploration up to the headwaters of the
Missouri River. The prizes were not earned, however,
due to the great problems involved. But the Spanish
did build fur trade posts in east Nebraska while
George Washington was president of the United States.
They also intermarried with the Indians and con-
tinued the peaceful relationship with the Indians
which the French and Canadians had enjoyed so many
years.
