remain on the lands of his Indian charges. Two of my
favorites stories are about the first policeman's ball and about
a prophetic joke in the Frontier Guardian, weekly Mormon
newspaper published in Kanesville, now the present city
 of Council Bluffs. The policeman's ball story is revealed
 in Hosea Stout's journal entries for late February and
early March 1847: Feb 25: "Went around preparing for a
police ball and at dark went on duty guard duty and staid
till midnight." Feb 27: President Young spoke of the
manner that the parties had been managed, and proposed
for those who had been, not to go to any more, as the
 house would soon be needed for something else. This, of
