The other story which should pique the fancy of any aging
flier is the advertising joke published in the Mormon
weekly Frontier Guardian at Kanesville. It purported to
be an advertisement for overnight flights from New York
to San Francisco. Both food and drink were offered. But
the 1849 advertisement warned prospective passengers they
would have to pay extra for any excess baggage checked on
for the flight. This little and otherwise unexplained
ad suggests to me the Saints enjoyed a good joke. At the
same time they were able to see themselves a thousand
miles away from where they might take advantage of such
a quick and easy way across the continent.
On the other hand, a serious, if tongue-in-cheek ad,
placed in the Frontier Guardian by gunsmith Jonathan
Browning certainly supports the idea of good humor
among the Saints: His April 4, 1849 ad read: "Gunsmithing
