and blacksmiths working with the Indians did almost nothing to change the face of the land.

    Into this primitive setting in 1846 came a stream
of religious refugees who would not only change the
face of the land, but also forever change the way
of life here. It might be said that the Mormons just
happened to be ahead of a general rush west-
ward. And it might also be said that the changes
they wrought here would soon have been made by
others had the Mormons traveled a different route.
