Sources for Understanding Chronology of Winter Quarters Settlements

Sept. 10, 1846
"About nine a.m., Elder Kimball and I rode out to find a location for the
council to winter, and returned in the afternoon. . . . I met with Elders
Heber C. Kimball, Orson Pratt, Wilford Woodruff, Willard Richards and
the High Council at seven p.m. The committee on location recommended
to locate on both sides of Willow Creek north of the present encampment.
The Twelve agreed to walk out in the morning and select their location for the winter." (Elden J. Watson, ed., Manuscript History of Brigham Young, p. 377)

Sept. 11, 1846
". . . about 10 1/2 Young, Kimball, O. Pratt, Richards, Woodruff, Geo. A.
Smith, A. Lyman, walked north near the timber. . . . struck a stake
[to_where] near where they would have a Council house. Cloudy.
returned home about 1 1/2 p.m. After Dinner and about 3 the Twelve,
with the high council & marshall returned to the [ravine?] & set a
compass. Prest. Young acting Surveyor and run a line on the south side of
main st. running E. & west 8 rods wide at 20 [past?] 4. runs East 24 rods
to a stake & east 3 rods further for a cross street. then from the place of
beginning west 3 rods for a cross street, thence west 34 rods then 3 rods
for a cross st. thence west 34 rods where the council design to remove the
course of the main st. south 6 rods then returned to place of beginning &
South 80 rods & returned to north part of 1st Camp at 5 mi before 6 & met

Sept. 12-14, 1846
Church leaders are engaged in other business, including preaching on
Sunday, September 13th, and organizing a rescue company to return to
Nauvoo.

Sept. 15, 1846
"About 9 Prest Young with his carriage & family & Dr. Richards rode out
on the bluff about 1/2 mile S. E. of the bluff where the village is to be
located to set a compass and established a burying ground. . . . at 4 took
Jane Richards & her Mother & Mary Richards with Wealthy L. Richards
corpse 3 yrs. old. went & buried her on the bluff east of the turnip patch."

Sept. 16, 1846
"1/4 to 7 P.M. council dissolved & repaired immediately to the spot design
for a winter location where they tarried till near sun set selecting the places

"Prest. Young enquired whether the council were disposed to raise another
enquiry concerning a location for the winter. voted that we all go down
